Egyptian singer Medhat Saleh has hit out at non-Egyptians in Cairo for “interfering” in the political affairs of the country. His criticism was aimed at non-Egyptian Arabs living in the country who are calling for the reinstatement of deposed president Mohammed Morsi. The Egyptian army toppled Morsi on 3 July following mass demonstrations against his rule. Medhat told Arab Today that he was “very saddened to hear Palestinian and Syrian dialects [of Arabic] in Rabi'a al-Adawiya Square every day supporting the Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators, when it has nothing to do with them". He went on to defend the armed forces, stating: “These personalities attack the Egyptian army, despite the fact that this army protects them as they are living in Egypt.” The singer, who is currently starring in the Ramadan TV series Mawja Hara (Heatwave), added: "These people who interfere in Egyptian affairs are the real enemies of Islam, working to gain worldly pleasures. I hope they leave the country in the near future.” Medhat’s comments come after a Cairo-based human rights group condemned the country’s media for generalising about the involvement of Palestinians and Syrians in the anti-Morsi protests.
