Venezuela's top electoral official said 41.53 percent of voters cast ballots Sunday in a controversial election to pick the members of a powerful new assembly to rewrite the constitution.
The head of the National Electoral Council, Tibisay Lucena, said there had been "extraordinary turnout" of more than eight million voters, in an election boycotted by the opposition and widely condemned by the international community as a power grab by embattled President Nicolas Maduro.
