European Union states failed Thursday in the latest bid to agree on a new five-year licence for the controversial weedkiller glyphosate, which critics believe causes cancer, ministers said.
"No qualified majority for glyphosate renewal in vote today," Luxembourg Environment minister Carole Dieschbourg tweeted after the vote, which comes just weeks before the current license expires December 15. Her Belgian counterpart confirmed the result
