Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) is hosting a training camp as part of "Shine", its Rio 2016 legacy project.
Seven athletes are training every day for a week at Aspire Academy's track field. They were chosen from poor areas of Brazil's Sao Paolo, according to Qatar News Agency (QNA).
They will also receive athletics training from the best coaches in the field, in addition to taking a number of physical tests that could help them on their way to becoming future Brazilian Olympic champions.
Secretary-General of QOC Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari said that the goal of Shine is to provide aspiring athletes with an experience that sets them on their way to achieving their dreams. He noted that the aspiring athletes were briefed on what they will experience in Qatar during the Olympics.
Al Kuwari expressed delight at seeing the athletes make the trip to Doha and use the state-of-the-art sporting facilities and get to know the culture. He expressed his hope of meeting those aspiring athletes again in Qatar for the 2019 World Championship in Athletics. The Secretary-General was also pleased to see Shine project implemented on the ground.
For his part, General Secretary of Qatar Athletics Federation Mohammed Isa Al Fadala said that Shine was the result of cooperation between his federation, QOC, and Aspire Academy. He added that the goal of the project is to employ Qatar's capabilities to developing sports worldwide, QNA reported.
