Imagine if you could peer into people's hearts just by looking at them. You'd be able to know who is bluffing and make a killing at the poker table, avoid plots by treacherous colleagues and even know exactly what to do to attract that special someone whom you have a major crush on. Singapore actress Jeanette Aw plays Yang Zhi Qing, a young woman with that ability in the upcoming Mandarin mystery drama "Beyond", but she said it was an ability she'd loathe to have in real life. "I think if I really could see people's inner thoughts, I'd be really scared because when you look into people's hearts, you may see something terrifying which you cannot accept," said Aw during the commencement ceremony for the drama on Wednesday. The bubbly actress lamented that the ability would seriously complicate her life. "Someone would say something to you, and you look into his heart and you find he isn't saying what he truly means, you'd ask yourself 'Why is he lying to me?' said Aw with a chuckle. "I think humans are complicated as it is. If you want to go and see what they are thinking about, it'd get even more complicated. Everyone has a right to privacy and things they'd rather keep a secret or a secret past." But if you think she'd prefer to be a normal person without any powers, you'd be dead wrong. Aw revealed that she would love to gain the ability to heal people. "I'd like to have the power of healing because there are diseases without a cure and I have lost loved ones before," Aw said. "I think I'd also be a lot happier. I feel terrible if I see people in need and there is nothing I can do to help!" "X-Files" meets "X-Men"? Apart from a woman who can read people's innermost thoughts, "Beyond", the first local drama with mystery and paranormal elements in the show in years, will also feature other interesting characters like a person who can freely manipulate a person's life force by touching him. "He just touches your palm for awhile and can take away years from your life. "He can then give those years to someone else and make him look youthful again while you age rapidly!" said Singapore actor Li Nanxing, who plays the show's main protagonist Jiang Wei, an ex-detective on a quest to find his missing wife. Along the way, Jiang meets Yang who develops feelings for him, and teams up with her to find his wife, but not before solving a variety of mysterious cases along the way. "When I got the script, I couldn't help but read it twice! I really love this role because it gives me a lot of opportunities to express myself and learn," Li enthused. "The story is very dynamic with characters paired up and later reshuffled in different ways throughout the six main story arcs of the show. Every arc is intricately linked to the next." "I think audiences will like this show as it is very different from the family dramas that are often done." Will "Beyond", which has the Mandarin title "X Yuan Su (Element X)", be "X-Files" meets "X-Men"? Li resolutely refused to divulge further information about the drama's storyline. "You'll find out when the show is done," said Li with a sly grin.
