Once Upon a Time guest star Scott Michael Foster says it is possible no one is more excited about the TV show's continuation of the Frozen franchise than his own family.
The Frozen story arc begins with the Season 4 premiere of the live-action fairytale series Once Upon a Time on ABC Sunday.
Foster, 29, plays hero Kristoff, while Elizabeth Lail portrays his fiancee, Princess Anna, and Georgina Haig acts the part of her sister, Queen Elsa.
"I didn't really know anything about Frozen and then my nieces and nephews -- when I went home for Christmas last year -- they were all singing the songs. I was like, 'What is this movie they are freaking out about?' And it's become a worldwide phenomenon. It's incredible, " Foster told UPI in a phone interview Friday.
"I've been cast in things before, obviously, and I would tell them about these shows and some of them were appropriate for them to watch. They didn't care. 'Oh, it's just Uncle Scott on TV.' Well, now that I am playing Kristoff, it's a very big deal in our family for two reasons. The kids love Frozen. All of the nieces and nephews. I've got six of them and they all love Frozen, so I've made fans of them, but also my sisters and my mom are all big fans of Once Upon a Time, so I really nailed it with this job."
Asked how he tackled a role that has only been previously played in an animated film, Foster said he tried to focus on the scripts for the TV episodes and make the live-action character his own.
"Everyone asks if I watched the movie and tried to do anything that Kristoff from Frozen the movie was doing and I haven't, obviously. I get the scripts and I've just been sort of cultivating the character based on the scripts I get and how I feel it should read. I don't feel like I am trying to be like anybody else. It's kind of like we're doing this all new for the first time," he explained.
Foster went on to say he has had a great experience making the episodes for this season and would love to return if the opportunity arises.
"I loved everyone on the show. The show is a lot of fun. I think the character is cool and funny, but at the same time heroic and romantic. It's a good mix of everything. It's a real fun character to play. Absolutely, I would love to return to that world," he said.
Best known for his work on the TV shows Greek, Quarterlife, Zero Hour and Halt and Catch Fire, Foster said he looks for interesting opportunities that allow him to develop as an actor, but doesn't necessarily follow a set career path.
"I just like to work. I always tell that to my agent. They say: 'What do you want to do? What kind of things do you want to do?' And I always say the same thing, 'Send me scripts that are good and have good people attached.' I'm not trying to say, 'I am looking for Indiana Jones meets Doctor Who.' If it's a good script and a good project and if I like it when I read it and find something I can identify with, then I'll go for it."
Once Upon a Time airs Sunday nights on ABC.
