Whether it's by offering guests a piece of the wall that fell 25 years ago, or recreating the menu served during that historic period a quarter of a century ago, hotels in Berlin are marking the anniversary of Berlin Wall’s fall in different ways.
On the weekend of November 7 to 9, thousands of visitors are expected to descend on the city and take part in a slew of commemorative events, including the lighting of a 15 km art installation, the Lichtgrenze (which means ‘border of light’), made of of 8,000 helium-filled balloons that will stand along the length of the former Berlin Wall.
At The Westin Grand Hotel Berlin, guests can go home with a piece of history in the ‘Tear Down the Wall’ package that includes a chance to chisel out a piece of the original concrete barrier, a section of which stands in front of the hotel, and take the souvenir piece home.
At the InterContinental Berlin, Tiergarten, guests can also take step back in time and revisit the historic occasion via their taste buds, as the kitchen will resurrect the menu from 25 years ago, including Russisch Ei (a variant on deviled eggs), Bulgarian Schopska salad, “falscher Hase” (a kind of meatloaf) and Rote Grütze (a red berry compote).
The special menu and buffet is available upon request.
Other hotels like the Adina Apartment Hotels across the city and the Almodóvar Hotel, Friedrichshain have also created special room packages that include visits to the DDR Museum, an interactive museum that traces the city’s past.
