A project is under way in Al Ain to provide an alternative source of irrigation for palm oases and replace water wells.
Al Ain Municipality and Al Ain Distribution Company are developing the project to increase the amount of water allocated for irrigating palm trees and eventually dispense with the groundwater wells currently used to preserve existing aquifers.
The project is part of efforts to maintain and operate oases in Al Ain, including the maintenance of irrigation schedules and the installation of plastic gates to facilitate irrigation and distribution of irrigation water in oases, as well as reduce water waste.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2017, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National.
