A fire erupted Saturday at the southeastern sector of the infamous landfill in the coastal city of Sidon. Civil Defense teams and the city’s firefighters were dispatched to the scene of fire, which caused plumes of white smoke to fill the Sidon sky. The fire is one of many this year that prompted the local municipality to launch a long-awaited project aimed at closing down the city’s dump. The project, overseen by the United Nations Development Program in line with the protocol signed by the Environment Ministry and Sidon’s Municipality, will turn the dump into a public park. The dump is thought to contain over 2-million cubic meters of waste.
