Bahrain is to develop the species of Houbara birds as part of efforts to conserve the wildlife. His Majesty’s Personal Representative, President of the Supreme Council for the Environment His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa today launched the project.
HM King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa gave directives to provide breeding habitats for Houbara birds (Chlamydotis undulate) in the Southern Governorate and protect them from overhunting and poaching.
HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa conveyed greetings from HM the King to UAE President Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and UAE Armed Forces Deputy Supreme Commander General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, wishing them health and happiness and their people further progress and prosperity.
In a statement today, HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa hailed the UAE leaders for constantly supporting Bahrain. He extended thanks to the Abu Dhabi Government for its support, hailing continuous cooperation with the UAE-based International Fund for Houbara Conservation, which offered Bahrain a number of Asian Houbara birds, also known as MacQueen's houbara (Chlamydotis macqueenii).
HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa described the project as vital to protect and conserve this species which is considered as an icon of Arab civilization and traditions, stressing the importance of providing sustainable habitat for houbara birds for future generations.
A specialized team has been commissioned to supervise the houbara conservation project in cooperation with the Supreme Council for the Environment and the National Guard.
