New details have emerged of a three-year-old girl’s death due to drowning in a pool of water near a street at the Harazat neighborhood of east Jeddah following heavy rain last week.
It has been claimed that reports had been submitted with the authorities concerned to pump the water out but no action was taken, local media reported on Sunday.
Heavy rain claimed 12 lives in various parts of the Kingdom last Tuesday, with Jeddah recording the highest rainfall of 22mm.
The girl’s uncle, Mastoor bin Marfoo’, was quoted as saying that his sister and her husband, along with their children, had come to visit his mother.
“On their way back home, while they were loading some stuff in the vehicle, the child, Mays, disappeared in just a few seconds. Everybody started searching for her but in vain,” he said.
However, he said, the girl’s footsteps led the family members to the pool of water. “Minutes later, we found her in the water. One of the neighbors, a doctor, tried to give her artificial respiration, but to no avail.”
He claimed that more than one report was submitted to the Jeddah secretariat to pump the water out, but unfortunately no one responded until a life was lost.
“He said his sister has gone into depression after losing her daughter — the youngest of her five children.
The spokesman of Makkah Civil Defense was quoted as saying the control center at the General Directorate of Civil Defense in Jeddah Governorate received a report about the girl’s drowning.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the child was playing near the pool of water along the asphalted street.
The Civil Defense handed over the site to the sub-municipality for further action, and the police are investigating,” the spokesman added.
