Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, has reiterated the U.A.E.'s support to those owning small agricultural businesses in the country, saying these dominate the agricultural sector.
In a statement released to mark the World Food Day on October 16th, the minister said that the government has strengthened its efforts to help small business owners by providing them various kinds of support, and addressing issues related to and challenges faced in achieving global food security. The government's initiatives were part of the international efforts made to alleviate hunger around the world.
Bin Fahad said owing to limited water resources and lack of arable land, the U.A.E. focussed upon adopting and promoting sustainable agricultural practices such as low water consumption, hydroponic and organic farming, as well as investing in research and technology to help in the cultivation of suitable crops requiring saline water and conducive to the specific nature of the soil.
The minister noted that the Ministry of Environment and Water launched a set of initiatives aimed at developing the farmers' capacity to adopt the latest technology to enhance agricultural production, conserve natural resources and put them to good use.
He also stressed that the U.A.E. will continue its support to the international community and its specialised organisations, especially the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, in its efforts to eradicate hunger around the world through developing sustainable agriculture to promote global food security.
The Environment and Water Minister also referred to the role the U.A.E. plays in supporting global food security through its developed infrastructure and logistical services which act as a regional hub, and as an important global point for food trade movement.
