Environment Minister Khaled Fahmi decided on Thursday to form a technical committee to determine the exact boundaries of the Wadi Degla protectorate to protect it against obstructions and transgressions in the area.
The panel will conduct its report in coordination with Cairo City Hall to make the best use of the nature reserve, located east of Maadi district.
The report will be submitted to the cabinet.
Wadi Degla was designated by Cairo City Hall as a protectorate in 1990. The 60 km²-sized protectorate passes through limestone rocks that had remained in the marine environment during the Eocene Epoch in the eastern desert ( 60 million years ). Therefore, it is rich with fossils.
The rain water dropping from the waterfalls affected the limestone rocks along the years and formed the so called canyon Degla.
The minister also assigned legal counselors and the technical support office of the southern area to make a memo about all transgressions in Shaq el Taban industrial zone.
