Al Ain - Arabstoday

The Centre of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi has set up recycling plants to dispose of tyres and plastic waste via environmentally-friendly methods. The plants, officially opened yesterday, are equipped with the latest technology to extract new economically viable products for different industrial use, said a centre official. The tyre recycling factory is located in the new industrial city (Truck Road), and the plastics recycling factory is located next to the existing Municipal Solid Waste Sorting Station and Compost Plant in Al Ain. The opening ceremony was attended by Majid Al Mansouri, managing director of the centre, Hamad Al Ameri, general manager the centre, and a number of officials and businessmen. The ceremony also included a presentation of manufacturing and transportation of products at the plants. The Dh70 million plastics recycling plant is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the highest efficiency and reliability. With two production lines, each having a capacity of 25 tonnes per day, the factory can recycle significant volumes of material daily. It has been designed to host two more production lines in the future, doubling its recycling capacity. Reinhard Goeschl, general manager of Emirates Environmental Technology, said the Emirates Factory for Plastic Recycling is the largest factory of its kind in the UAE. The facility will process plastic recovered by the sorting station, from mixed waste collected from households, business establishments, and organisations across the Al Ain area. "By diverting material from landfill and recycling waste materials on one site, the negative environmental impacts of transportation are minimised," said Goeschl, adding that the production of recycled raw material will reduce the pressure from the already depleting natural resources. Diab Abu Shaheen, general manager of Omnix-Abu Dhabi, said the Gulf Factory for Rubber is a specialised and first-of-its-kind tyre recycling factory in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. With a production capacity of 6.3 tonnes per hour, the factory is the result of a partnership between the Centre of Waste Management and Omnix International.
