New York - Arab Today

Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait, is due in New York, US, on Friday to sign a Climate Agreement that was concluded in Paris, France, late last year.

Kuwait received an invitation from French President Francois Hollande and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to sign the Paris agreement at the UN Headquarters on April 22nd.

The Paris Agreement falls within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), governing greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance, effective 2020.

According to Kuwait News Agency, KUNA, the agreement was negotiated during the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Paris and adopted by consensus on 12th December 2015.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, said that Kuwait attached great importance to the environment in consistency with international action in this regard.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said Kuwait is keen to follow up on climate change stemming from the Emir of Kuwait's guidance. He added that the international attention on this matter was reflected in Kuwait, which gives environmental issues international and global priorities, a matter that appeared clear in its report on human rights.

Kuwait, during its participation in the climate summit in Paris, highlighted the importance that the agreement guaranteed rights of regional countries in achieving sustainable development.

Kuwait's Environment Public Authority (EPA) submitted a national project aimed at reducing global warming and greenhouse emissions, coping with climate change and national circumstances of the country.
