The first baby houbara of the season was named Frekhan on Wednesday by nine-year-old Khaled Abdullah, a pupil at Future Academy School in Al Ain.
Khaled's suggestion for the name was selected out of 400 entries as part of the Name the Chick campaign by the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC).
The name, a play on the word "chick” with connotations of "cute” and "little”, won Khaled an iPad Air.
Mohammed Al Baidani, the IFHC's director-general, said: "Selecting the winner was a challenge but we selected Frekhan for its imaginative play on words and suitability for our fuzzy new friend. We look forward to bringing children across the UAE news of Frekhan as part of our ongoing efforts to engage the youth in our conservation efforts.”
