Volvo Trucks will introduce tractor-trailers in 2016 with up to 3.5 percent better fuel efficiency than current models, the Swedish company said in a statement Friday.
The company said the improvement will come through better aerodynamic design and more efficient engines.
Goran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing, said that the increased fuel efficiency builds on improvements that were made in 2013 in tractor engines.
Improving fuel efficiency helps to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the company said.
The new tractor-trailers will also have features designed to minimize the force of motion, known as torque, on the trucks which the company said will also improve fuel efficiency.
The new features will allow drivers to adjust for road conditions and the heaviness of loads.
In June, Volvo introduced a dual clutch system for heavy trucks which it said would improve performance and fuel efficiency and also help cut greenhouse gas emissions.
