The Kia K9 sedan went on sale in South Korea on Wednesday. Kia's first rear-wheel-drive vehicle comes equipped with a V6 and an eight-speed transmission. The K9 also introduces some features for Kia that will trickle down to other models. The K9 is based on the Hyundai Genesis and is the biggest sedan to roll out of Kia's factory. The engine and the A-pillar are pushed back, accentuating the long hood and the short front overhang. Kia says the K9 has a large “prestige distance,” which is the distance between the center of the front wheel and the A-pillar. It's an indicator of luxury. The K9 sedan is a big car with a large cabin. From the outside, it bests the BMW 5-series and the Jaguar XF in length, width and height. Initially, power will come from a 286-hp V6. Next year a 329-hp direct-injection V6 will join the lineup. Both engines have continuously variable valve timing and a variable intake system to improve performance and efficiency. The eight-speed automatic transmission can be operated with a shift-by-wire function using a joystick on the center console. Four driving modes are available--eco, normal, snow and sport. Each offers different characteristics for the transmission, engine, suspension and steering. The K9 was put together with almost 75 percent high-strength steel, which makes the car ride like a flagship sedan, according to Kia. The K9 has a range of luxury features, such as fully adaptive LED headlights, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection and an around-view monitor with four cameras. Upgraded models will get an LCD instrument cluster, a head-up display and twin rear monitors to entertain back passengers. A VIP option will offer twin heated and ventilated rear seats with a reclining backrest, a sliding cushion and lower leg support. Pricing hasn't been announced, and Kia has no plans to take the car to the United Kingdom, let alone bring it to the United States. We do expect that to change, though, in the future.
