Al Jazeera is to stream its Arabic and English TV news channels through a custom built application for all Samsung smart TVs, in what is the Qatar-based network's first application for web-enabled televisions. "Presence on connected TV, which is reshaping the conventional way we watch TV, is part of Al Jazeera's multi screen distribution strategy. We are pleased to announce a partnership between a global brand like ours and one of the most innovative and largest televisions manufacturers in the world," said Al Anstey, managing director of Al Jazeera English and director of media development for the TV network. Samsung has recently claimed to have a 45% market share in the Gulf region for the smart TV category and a global market share of 50. In the last quarter of 2011, the Korean manufacturer recorded a 21% increase year-on-year in the Gulf, providing applications in Arabic, English, and Hindi. "Samsung's development of regional applications and content has allowed us to stand out as market leaders in this category. Introducing Al Jazeera on Samsung smart TV's is a cornerstone in application development as it is the first live streaming news application within the region," said Young Soo Kim, president, Samsung Gulf Electronics. "Our agreement will allow smart TV users around the world to access Al Jazeera news anytime and anywhere," he added. Samsung has 250 smart TV applications for the Middle East. Dubai's state broadcaster Dubai Media Incorporated streams all of its TV channels for Samsung's connected TVs, while YuppTV streams over 60 Indian channels, and Arabian Radio Network provides a live radio feed and programme schedule.
