Saturday Night Live satirized sentimental car commercials -- and the alarming trend of young westerners joining the extremist Islamist rebel group Daesh -- in a single sketch this weekend.
In the pre-taped video clip, Taran Killam plays a father who is heartbroken to drop off his teen-age daughter at a bus station. After they promise to see each other at Thanksgiving, SNL guest host Dakota Johnson, who was playing the daughter, said, "Hey, Dad, thanks."
"You've got it, kiddo. Looks like your ride is here," Killam observed, as a pickup truck filled with armed men and adorned with the ISIS flag pulls up.
"You be careful, OK?" Dad told his daughter, who smiled knowingly and assured, "Dad, it's just ISIS."
Catching the eye of one of the men on the truck, the father tearfully said, "Take care of her," to which the man replied, "Death to America." The truck pulled away and the girl continued to smile as the men shot their guns into the air.
A voiceover is then heard saying: "ISIS. We'll take it from here, Dad."
The sketch drew some criticism on social media, but Killam quickly defended it in a Twitter post.
"Proud of this. Freedom to mock is our greatest weapon. Thanks to the writers who asked not to be mentioned by name," Killam tweeted.
