EU Commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmstrom and Italian interior Minister Angelino Alfano hosted an informal ministerial dinner in Luxembourg Wednesday night to discuss the challenges posed by the terrorist propaganda on the Internet.
The meeting brought together EU Member States' Ministers of Home Affairs and senior representatives of Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft, according to a joint statement by Alfano and Malmstrom today.
Italy holds the current EU Presidency.
"The timing of the meeting coincides with the heightened online propaganda efforts directed at western audience by terrorist organisations operating in Iraq and Syria," it noted.
The participants discussed various possible ways of addressing the challenge. It was agreed to organise joint training and awareness raising workshops for the representatives of law enforcement authorities, Internet industry and civil society, it added.
The EU interior ministers begin a 2-day meeting in Luxembourg Thursday to discuss counter-terrorism measures, and migration and visa policies.
