A r-education program for parents, aimed at making them understand children's needs better, launched by the Foundation for Children of Slovakia on the Children's Day.
"From dialogues between children and psychologists, we found that many parents do not understand their children and are requesting them to be something different from their own idea and are enforcing their own dream on them", stated Jaro Krafka, PR manager of the NGO for children.
Miroslava Simegova, a child psychologist, said some parents are over-parenting their children they "have a harder time to accept their children's abilities, which subsequently leads the parent to experiment with their child."
Many parents are focusing on just one talent of the child which can hinder the prospects of finding out that the child might be better at something different.
Martin Brestovansky, speaker at the University of Trnava, pointed out that "if a child can express their opinion in a articulate way in a short amount of time, it can also be seen as a form of talent."
There is the possibility for unorthodox talents to be hindered if not found, Brestovansky warned.
The campaign was created as an online questionnaire where parents can find out if they know their own child and also can learn how to expand their knowledge about the child.
"We want to say to parents, that they should leave their children to develop themselves as they wish. If it wants to be violinist, don't force them into football," Krafka added.
According to the organizer, the online program will last for a month, from June 1 to June 30
