UK Prime Minister Special Envoy for Economic Partnership with Algeria Lord Richard Risby, said Monday in Algiers his country is committed to contribute "in a constructive way" to develop English language teaching in Algeria.
"As President Bouteflika said, English is increasingly important. Several announcements would be made about education and English teaching in next month’s conference in London," Lord Risby told the press after his meeting with National Education Minister Nouria Benghebrit.
Lord Risby is in Algeria for a two-day visit to prepare for the conference of investment opportunities in Algeria, to be held on December 10 in London.
As part of the education cooperation between UK and Algeria, the "British Council" will be expanded to provide language facilities and training facilities.
For her part, Benghebrit said that relations between Algeria and the United Kingdom in the field of education and language teaching are set to "move forward," stressing, in this respect the "will and commitment" of Algeria.
"Algeria is ready to open to all foreign languages, especially English. We have a great desire to improve and develop the teaching of English in Algeria with the close collaboration of the British partner," she said.
She recalled that "the number of students who are learning English at the middle and secondary education cycles exceeds 4 million."
