AUB trustee Gabriel M. Rebeiz, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, was selected, together with Toyota Motor Company, as one of the winners of the 2014 R&D100 Award, which selects the top 100 inventions or discoveries which can change our world.
The award was given for the development of a new class of automotive phased array radars that have very high imaging capabilities, and can be used to track pedestrians and kids at distances of up to 50 meters from the car, even if they are next to large objects such as trucks and walls, and even in poor visibility conditions such as rain, fog or poorly lit areas. This work will be implemented in the new generation of self-driving cars, and in collision avoidance systems for current automotive platforms. The black-tie award banquet is scheduled on November 7, 2014, in Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, USA.
A trustee since 2007 and an AUB graduate (BEN ’82), Rebeiz is Distinguished Professor and the Wireless Communications Industry Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Formerly, he was a professor at University of Michigan. He is the director of the UCSD/DARPA Center on RF MEMS Reliability and Design Fundamentals, and leads a large group in wireless communication systems, phased arrays, and sensor systems. Rebeiz is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has received numerous awards for his research in antennas and microwaves, and for his teaching. He is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology (PhD electrical engineering ’88.)
