A Bahraini delegation, headed by the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW ) Hala Al-Ansari will participate in the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women(CSW) that takes place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on March 9 - 20.
The CSW will undertake a review of progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years after its adoption at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. The review (Beijing+20) will also include the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, the first five-year assessment conducted after the adoption of the Platform for Action, which highlighted further actions and initiatives.
SCW Secretary-General will take place in business meetings and round tables focusing on priorities in order to achieve gender equality, empowerment of women and human rights of women and girls. national mechanisms for gender equality , as well as a session to discuss the results of the events organised by UN regional commissions during Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women in all fields.
During CSW’s annual two-week session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities gather at UN headquarters in New York.
They discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the key global policy document on gender equality, and the 23rd special session of the General Assembly held in 2000 (Beijing+5), as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women. Member States agree on further actions to accelerate progress and promote women’s enjoyment of their rights in political, economic and social fields. The outcomes and recommendations of each session are forwarded to ECOSOC for follow-up.
