Sheikha Fatima bin Mubarak is the leader of the women’s movement in UAE, and in recognition of her efforts, the General Women’s Union (GWU) was established. Her approach in this field is characterized by achieving balance between openness to the spirit of the age and maintaining the originality of Arab and Islamic traditions. Sheikha Fatima is a role model to be followed by all Emirati women and since establishing the General Women’s Union, She has achieved a qualitative leap in Women’s empowerment with continuing efforts and future plans aimed at gaining more achievements in this field. The International Women’s Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.
