PLO Executive Committee member, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, met with a UNI Global Union visiting delegation headed by Philip J. Jennings, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.
Both parties discussed the latest Palestinian political developments, the worsening conditions of the Palestinian people as a result of the most recent campaign of aggression and terror in Gaza, the Palestinian bid at the UN and future political initiatives, and the importance of international cooperation in order to end the occupation, as well as issues of mutual interest and cooperation.
Dr. Ashrawi stressed, "The asymmetry of power plus Israeli impunity and the deprivation of the Palestinian people of their protection have led to this deterioration in conditions and Israel's deliberate destruction of the two-state solution."
Dr. Ashrawi further denounced Israel's unlawful acts, its expropriation of lands for military objectives, the construction of settlements, and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians and their environs in East Jerusalem: "Israel cannot superimpose 'Greater Israel' on historical Palestine."
Both Dr. Ashrawi and the Delegation stressed the need for moving beyond the EU guidelines, urging the international community to apply effective measures and legislation in the context of human rights and respect for the global rule of law:"Israel must act in accordance with international law and conventions like all states. It must be held accountable before the prospects for a just and sustainable peace are destroyed indefinitely."
