Head of the National Council for Women (NCW) Mervet Tellawi said on Tuesday Egypt made huge progress in promoting gender equality and women empowerment.
The remarks came during the 5th Ministerial Conference on Women’s Role in Development of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States, which is held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
"There are many challenges facing women in Islamic countries, especially after the revolutions or the so-called 'Arab Spring'," she said.
Tellawi called on the Islamic countries to clarify all facts related to women position in the Islamic communities.
She also urged raising women’s participation in decision-making mechanisms, providing equal opportunities for women in society and eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and combating violence against women.
During the two-day event the OIC member states have agreed to establish the Women’s Development Organization to be headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
