Under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Consultative Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, inaugurated today Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre.
HRH Princess Sabeeka lauded the royal support to the exhibition which started as a national event in the fifties and has enjoyed the support of Bahrain leaders. She praised the role of the exhibition in achieving the goals of the national initiative in developing the agricultural sector by expanding green areas, increasing local agricultural production, achieving food sufficiency, highlighting the role of agriculture in developing wildlife and boosting the agricultural culture.
HRH Princess Sabeeka stressed the efforts made to ensure success of the annual event in cooperation with official and non-government organisations as well as the private sector establishments. She toured the exhibition and got informed about the participating parties from Bahrain and abroad who showcased the latest innovations and methods to exploit limited areas in agriculture and highlight their role in reducing pollution. She also honoured the winners in Bahrain Garden Club competition.
This year's exhibition is held under the theme "Mini-Gardens". The University of Bahrain cooperated with the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) to design the main platform which embodies the BIGS 2017 theme. The university has also carried out the designs which aim to optimize small areas in order to set up mini-gardens on the basis of applicable scientific procedures.
French, German, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Japanese, Canadian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Turkish and Russian companies are taking part in the 2017 edition. Agricultural companies from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Syria and Morocco are also participating in BIGS 2017.
