Kuwait will attend the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women which will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 9-20 March 2015, it was learned here on Sunday.
Heading the Kuwaiti delegation to the session will be Chairperson of the Women's Affairs Committee at the Cabinet Sheikha Latifa Fahad Al-Salem Al-Sabah. In a press statement by the Committee, it noted that the main focus of the session will be on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
To be exact, the Commission will undertake a review of progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years after its adoption at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.
The review will also include the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, the first five-year assessment conducted after the adoption of the Platform for Action, which highlighted further actions and initiatives on women's issues.
Representatives of UN Member States, UN entities, and a number of NGOs from all regions of the world will attend the session.
The Kuwaiti Committee also noted in its press statement today that the Arab League-affiliated panel on affairs of the Arab Family will present to the UN session a report sanctioned by Arab countries on the current status of women in the Arab world.
Sheikha Latifa is scheduled to address the Commission on the achievements of Kuwaiti women in numerous walks of life in the past few years.
