A suburban Detroit grandmother and former schoolteacher has been charged with the fatal shooting of her 17-year-old grandson, police said. Jonathan Hoffman of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., told a 911 operator that he had been shot in the chest by his grandmother and was dying when a second gunshot silenced him, The Detroit News reported Tuesday. Officers said when they arrived at the scene Sandra Layne, 74, opened the door with a gun in her right hand. The mother of five and grandmother of nine was arraigned Monday on an open murder charge in the death of her grandson, the Detroit Free Press reported. Judge Marc Barron ordered Layne held without bond. Hoffman was living with Layne so he could finish his senior year at Farmington Central High School after his parents moved to Arizona. An aunt told the Free Press that Jonathan's parents didn't realize there might be issues with his grandmother. "Obviously, the issue lies with her mental facilities," Judy Metzger said. Layne's lawyer declined to comment on what may have led to the shooting.
