A Detroit woman gave birth to a boy Tuesday, three days after she had been shot in the back and set on fire, authorities said. The condition of Latonya Bowman, 22, and her son were unavailable, the Detroit Free Press reported. The birth came the same day two Warren, Mich., men, including an ex-boyfriend, were formally charged in the attack, The Detroit News reported. Antonio Mathis and Jamal Rogers, both 22, were arraigned on charges that include assault with intent to murder, conspiracy to commit assault with intent to murder and felony firearm possession. The News said both suspects were ordered held in the Macomb County Jail without bond after pleading innocent. Their next court appearance was set for June 7. The newspapers said police believe Rogers is the father of the child and wanted Bowman killed because he didn't want to be responsible for the baby. Police allege Rogers lured Bowman, who was nine months pregnant, into his garage in Warren early Saturday to suggest they reconcile. Mathis allegedly then held a gun on Bowman and taped her eyes, mouth and hands before putting her in the back seat of her car. Police said while Rogers went back in the house, Bowman was driven to a field in Detroit where Mathis doused her with lighter fluid and set her on fire. He allegedly shot her as she tried to put out the flames. Police said she played dead and Mathis left. She then drove herself to a gas station where she called her mother, who helped her get to a hospital.
