Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD), has commended L'Oreal-UNESCO Middle Eastern Fellowship Award on advancing Arab women in the field of scientific research.
She congratulated winners of this year's award, urging them to further upgrade their success. Each winner will receive 20,000 euro.
Sheikha Lubna said that the women's role has been growing steadily in the Arab world, referring to the women's role in the U.A.E. in societal sectors, including the higher education and scientific research.
She made the remarks yesterday at the ceremony held at ZU in Dubai. Four GCC scientists were honoured, including Emirati Habiba Al Safar, Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Abu Dhabi's Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, for her study on the identification of genetic and environmental risk factors associated with type two diabetes, a disease with a high prevalence in the U.A.E..
Two women in Saudi Arabia also received the awards: Nouf Al Shareef won the award for her research on genes identified as possible contributors to salinity tolerance, and Jasmeen Merzaban for immunology research focusing on stem cells and cell migration. While, Najat Al Odaini, from Yemen, received the award for environmental research on the high fluoride concentration of her country's groundwater.
