The UAE has been a leading supporter of the military-led establishment in Egypt
Officials in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said they foiled an attempt by Egypt-based hackers to bring down government websites, local newspaper Gulfnews
reported on Monday.
The United Arab Emirates Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT), a cyber-security coordination centre affiliated to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), managed to block the attempt to hack the websites so it only inflicted limited damage, the TRA said.
“From the first instance, the emergency team set out to work on two routes, one to maintain and protect the targeted websites and the second concentrated on defining the source of danger,” Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, Director General of the TRA, told Emirates News Agency (WAM).
The foiled hacking attempt seems to be in retaliation for the UAE’s backing of the forces that ousted Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
The UAE has been a leading supporter of the military-led establishment in Egypt since Morsi was toppled earlier this month. The UAE is also a stern opponent of Morsi's
Muslim Brotherhood, accusing supporters of the group with plotting to overthrow the UAE's Western-backed rulers.
According to Gulfnews, after the overthrow of Morsi, the UAE has so far transferred $3 billion in aid to Egypt.
