New Delhi - UPI

The Indian matchmaking site Shaadi.com says it has launched the Facebook game Angry Brides to discourage the practice of dowry in India. Inspired by the game Angry Birds, the player competes with three grooms for a large dowry. The grooms can be hit with tomatoes, brooms and shoes, the Hindustan Times said Tuesday. The payment of cash or gifts from the bride to the groom's family as dowry is illegal in India but still widely practiced. Shaadi.com said a 2007 study found one out of every four deaths in India is dowry-related, the Deccan Chronicle reported. "This game is our way of condemning the menace and telling our members to take a stand against it," a company spokesman said. "After all, marriage is an institution of love, not dowry."
