Samsung’s Galaxy S5 smartphone may have eye scanning technology, to outdo Apple’s fingerprint sensor that was introduced with the iPhone 5s. Lee Young Hee, the executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile arm, told Bloomberg at CES in Las Vegas that the company is “studying the possibility, but we can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5.” She added that many people are fanatical about the iris scanning software. What’s certain is that the Galaxy S5 will be paired with an updated version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, alongside more advanced functions and a sleeker design. She added that the smartphone will be released in February, when Samsung usually announces its flagship phone, days before the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device would then be available to customers around March or April. After it posted profits in early January that missed estimates, Samsung is likely to push forward its attempt to dominate the high-end smartphone market as well as try to attract customers tempted by cheaper handsets. Sales of the Galaxy S4 slowed down following the release of the high-end iPhone 5s and budget 5c in the Autumn of 2013. “Competition is going to intensify, and it’s not going to be an easy year for the company,” analyst Lee Seung Woo from IBK Securities Co. told Bloomberg.
