Google Maps users can now raft down the rapids of the Colorado River, from the comfort of a couch, following the launch of 'river view' for the Grand Canyon. The company added the feature to Google Street View, allowing users to ride the rapids and discover the canyon along the Colorado River. Users will be able to view iconic spots like Deer Creek Falls or North Canyon, or even climb up the Nankoweap Granaries. The project provides digital access to the Grand Canyon's premier sites, most of which can be reached only by boat, not accessible to the casual traveller. Google has collaborated with conservation group American Rivers for the project. "We're proud to partner with Google and Street View to raise awareness of the need to protect and restore the river. It's time to speak up and protect the wonder of the Grand Canyon and the riches of a healthy Colorado River," said Chris Williams, senior vice president of conservation, American Rivers. While the new feature will definitely appeal to "armchair adventurers," an old-fashioned trip to the Grand Canyon is highly recommended.
