Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayyeb, warned of schemes by some regional powers to spread chaos among Sunni Muslims.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Dr Abdel Aziz al Tewejri, the director of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Grand Imam said such regional powers exploited the differences among the Sunni powers to spread their ideologies.
The Grand Imam stressed the importance of disseminating the moderate teachings of Islam to fight extremism.
For his part, Tewejri said his organization is operating in Sunni countries to stop the sectarian sedition, pointing out that some regional powers used the Houthis in Yemen as a spearhead against the Sunnis.
He called for cementing cooperation with Al Azhar to fight extremist and terrorist groups.
