Cambodia on Wednesday marked the 10th anniversary of King Norodom Sihamoni's coronation, urging people to continue united for national peace and development.
In a rare public appearance, Sihamoni stressed the importance of national solidarity and unification, which are the basic foundation for peace and development. "On this occasion, I'd like to appeal to the people in all walks of life to unite together solidly as one under the roof of the constitution and state laws in order to contribute to protecting and constructing our beloved motherland in all fields," he said to about 20,000 people in a ceremony, which was held in front of the Royal Palace and was televised live.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Hun Sen, parliament chief Heng Samrin, opposition leader and lawmaker Sam Rainsy and other senior officials and foreign diplomats.
Meanwhile, the king commended Hun Sen for leading Cambodia to peace, political stability, solidarity and national unification.
Sihamoni, 61, ascended the throne as the King of Cambodia on Oct. 29, 2004 after his father late King Norodom Sihanouk abdicated due to health problems.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Sen and opposition leader Sam Rainsy highly spoke of the king's role in social development and national unification. "His Majesty the King has donated assets to build a lot of social achievements," Hun Sen said in a blessing message to the king."These humanitarian activities have contributed to rehabilitating and developing the nation rapidly." "The king is the symbol of national unification, he always encourages all parties to show respect for each other and to seek solutions to conflicts peacefully for the sake of the nation,"Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, told reporters after attending the ceremony.
