Kuwait will share the world the celebrations marking the International Youth Day (IYD) on Friday, August 12, with a view to optimizing the role of the youth in social development. The Public Authority for Youth and Sport (PAYS) will organize a celebration on Monday under auspices and in presence of its Director General Faisal Al-Jazzaf, PAYS Deputy Director General for Youth Affairs Jassem Ya'quob told KUNA on Thursday. "The celebration will feature the PAYS awareness programs on national unity for youth and the summer training courses," he said. The agenda of this year's IYD aims to draw attention to issues such as poverty alleviation, political and cultural awareness, and involvement in decision-making for better future as well as the outlook of the labor market, and health, educational and environment issues, he added. The IYD is an awareness day designated by the United Nations in late 1999 pursuant to the recommendation of the World Conference of ministers Responsible for Youth, held on 8-12 August, 1998, in Lisbon, Portugal. The first IYD was on 12 August 2000. As with other political awareness days, such as Earth Day, the purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues
