Part of the eastern gate of Tjaru Fortress that dates back to the New Kingdom of Egypt period has been discovered near the Suez Canal by an Egyptian archaeological mission, Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el Damaty said.

Three blocks of limestone with inscriptions of Rameses II were unearthed with each having a height of three meters and width of one meter, showing that massiveness of the gate, the minister has said.

The massive fortress is located at a site called Tell-Huba, three kilometers east of the Suez Canal.

Tjaru is situated on the Way of Horus, the major road leading out of Egypt into Canaan (Palestine).

Also a burial site from the 26th Dynasty has been discovered in the area, he added.
