Gong Xiaosheng
Cairo - Arab Today

Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Tarek Adel met on Sunday with Chinese Special Envoy to the Middle East Gong Xiaosheng at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, they discussed a number of regional issues, notably the Yemeni and Syrian crises as well as the Palestinian cause.

Egypt pays great attention to such discussions with China as it has an influential role in the international arena, the Egyptian official said.

For his part, the Chinese envoy said that his country is keen to exchange views and boost bilateral coordination with Egypt thanks to its key role in settling different pressing regional issues.

Also, Xiaosheng briefed Adel on the outcome of the latest talks that he held with various Yemeni parties over the past period.

The two Egyptian and Chinese diplomats stressed their support for the unity and stability of Yemen, the legitimate President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government.

Xiaosheng and Adel called for reaching a political solution to the Yemeni crisis with the participation of all warring parties, based on the Gulf initiative, its executive mechanisms and the outcome of the national dialogue as well as the UN competent resolutions.

As for Syria, the two officials underlined the importance of stepping up efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis in a way that preserves the state's stability and its unity.

This can be done through the participation of all factions of the Syrian moderate opposition and the application of all principles of the Geneva 1 Communique and the U.N. Security Council Resolution No. 2254, according to the two diplomats.

With regard to the Palestinian cause, Adel said that Egypt will continue providing its support for Palestine through its membership at the UN Security Council and in coordination with the Palestinian government.

Xiaosheng pointed to his country's supportive stance to the Palestinian cause, saying there will not be a regional stability unless the Palestinian cause is resolved.
