The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, participated in the opening of the United Nations General Assembly at its 72nd session, which discusses several issues of concern to all Member States of the United Nations, aiming to develop solutions to current crises and to achieve a better future for all countries and peoples of the world.
In his speech, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for the need to work to combat terrorism and stop its funding, referring to the formation of an international mediation committee to resolve various crises, affirming the need to respect the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and to support and provide assistance to refugees instead of closing the border.
The President of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly, Miroslav Lajčák, addressed the challenges facing the international community, particularly the persistence of poverty, terrorism and the negative effects of climate change, affirming that these challenges affect all and that civilians pay the price of the continuing conflicts, stressing the need to achieve peace and work for the prevention of crises.
In his address to the UN General Assembly, President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, criticized the Islamic Republic of Iran and North Korea, affirming that North Korea’s nuclear tests pose a serious threat to the world, a decisive response to its missiles that threaten the United States and its allies is necessary and nuclear disarmament is the only way to deal with North Korea.
President Donald Trump explained that the regime in Iran is outlawed and undermines peace in the Middle East, and that the Iranian people are victims of this regime which spends oil money on supporting terrorism and terrorist group Hezbollah, stressing that this system will not last forever and the day will come when Iran will be held accountable for their crimes, describing the nuclear agreement between the international community and Iran as the worst in history.
The president added that Iran is acting in the worst dictatorship manner, and that it is time for the world to prevent Iran from continuing its policies and time for the Iranian government to stop supporting terrorism and respects the sovereignty of its neighbors.
The American President affirmed the importance of cooperating to confront countries that support extremism, terrorist groups, radical ideologies and those who are trying to spread chaos, in order to achieve peace and security, especially after the spread of terrorism everywhere in the world.
The most important speakers at the first day of the General Debate were: King Abdullah II of Jordan, President of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi of Egypt, President Emmanuel Macron of France, in addition to a number of leaders and heads of delegations participating in the work of the 72nd session of the General Assembly.
