His Majesty King Abdullah II on Sunday thanked members of the Lower House of Parliament for their efforts during the house’s extraordinary session during which they passed a package of legislation pertaining to the development of the judiciary.
During a meeting with the house speaker, members of the permanent office, and heads of committees at the Al Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah emphasized the importance of coordination and cooperation between the parliament and government to serve citizens’ interests.
His Majesty said the legislative performance of the parliament during the current session was up to expectations, pointing out that having efficient parliamentary committees contributes to developing the chamber’s performance and enhancing its legislative and supervisory role.
“You have challenges, especially the economic one, but we are moving in the right direction,” the King told the lawmakers, adding: “It is not always easy to solve problems as quickly as we want, but we must always think about how to move forward.”
His Majesty stressed that the legislature and the government must always work together to pass important laws without delay to overcome difficult challenges at the local and regional levels.
He hailed the team spirit and effective coordination various state institutions maintained in the past period.
Speaking about municipal and local councils elections slated for August 15, King Abdullah said the polls will help in better identifying development priorities in the various regions of the Kingdom.
On Jerusalem ad the Palestinian cause, the King said there will be no breakthrough in the peace process, if there is no U.S. commitment to supporting a solution to the Palestinian issue.
“Without the Hashemite custodianship and the steadfastness of the Jerusalemites, the holy sites would have been lost many years ago”, His Majesty said, asserting: “Our success requires one stand with the Palestinian brothers, so that our cause wouldn’t be weakened and our rights would be maintained.”
He warned that the future of the Palestinian issue is at stake and reaching a solution is becoming even more difficult. In this context, King Abdullah called for more efforts and intensive work with the U.S. administration to make the necessary progress in the coming period.
The King also spoke about yesterday’s shooting incident in the southern governorate of Ma’an where a policeman was killed and said security agencies are a red line and that the rule of law must always be upheld.
Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Atef Tarawneh said the house will remain committed to its legislative and supervisory role, expressing appreciation for His Majesty’s keenness to communicate with legislators.
Heads of the House’s committees reviewed legislative achievements they had accomplished in the legal, economic, administrative, educational, youth, women, culture, health, agriculture, labor, energy, transport and tourism fields.
