Author Laura Lavayén sheds an important light on the difficulties of adjusting to life as an illegal immigrant in the United States in her timely new Spanish-language book, “Ilegales” (published by Trafford Publishing).
Set in Philadelphia and the countries of origins of its protagonists, “Ilegales” chronicles the experiences of a group of people living illegally in the United States. Known as coyotes and document forgers, the group becomes acquainted when a detective and a lawyer set out to see if this group of illegal immigrants had obtained false documents through the same person.
Bonds of friendships are created among the protagonists, who find that they share many things in common. All of them work and feel united by similar problems: the longing for their homeland and the struggle to achieve the American dream.
“I do not intend to mislead readers to think that behind every illegal there is an innocent person, who thought that we are all free to live where we like it, or that entering a country illegally is not such a serious crime, or that all the stories end as well as they do in my book,” Lavayén says. “I just wanted to write a book with a little adventure, which allowed us to think that, in this life, everything can have a good ending.”
