Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Thursday called for China's tourism sector to shift development priorities from quantity to structure, quality and efficiency. Wang made the remarks when meeting with Taleb Rifai, secretary-general of the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations (UNWTO). Noting that China's tourism sector has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years, Wang said the Chinese government attaches great importance to tourism and has clarified the decision to make tourism a strategic pillar industry in the country. He said the country's tourism sector needs to change its development pattern by improving relevant mechanisms, regulations, and services, so as to ensure tourism safety and promote the better development of the sector. During the meeting, Rifai handed Wang an open letter, which is part of the Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign launched by the UNWTO and the World Travel and Tourism Council. Speaking highly of China's tourism development, Rifai said the UNWTO is ready to enhance its cooperation with China's tourism sector.
