Luxor - Mohammed al-Edeissi

A campaign has been launched by Egypt's Tourism Police in the southern tourist hub of Luxor in order to remove offensive media in the city, especially in the west where several ancient temples and monuments are located. The campaign saw the Tourism Police removing banners which carried offensive words against the tour guides working in the city, in addition to forcing street vendors to leave areas close to tourist attractions. Officer Hosni Hussein from the Tourism and Monuments department in southern Egypt told Arabstoday that the campaign will be followed on a daily basis in order to impose full control in tourist sites. "They were 'occupied' by the street vendors whom the a lot of tourists had filed complaints about the harassments they do. Eight vendors were arrested and charged of "selling goods in an prohibited area". Officer Hussein said they will be held accountable according to the law "in order to make an example of them for those who intend to break the law."
