On 3 and 4 April, the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon is organizing a workshop on Aviation Security at the Civil Aviation Safety Centre in close cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities.
The workshop, which was opened today by HE the Minister of Transport Youssef Fenianos and the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation, Mrs. Koch, brought together representatives of the aviation security sector, namely from the Civil Aviation General Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Rafic Hariri International Airport's Security, EU Member States' aviation security departments and the European Civil Aviation Conference.
The objective of the workshop is to exchange expertise and insights on the security threats that civil aviation is facing, including with regards to regulations and international standards.
Mrs. Koch said: "The sharing of experience in this sensitive area will pave the way for an even stronger cooperation between the EU and Lebanon on aviation security, for the benefit of the millions of passengers coming in and out of Beirut's airport every year."
Minister Fenianos noted: "Despite all the challenges we face, my main goal remains to secure the implementation of internationally recognized security measures in order to be in line with the best practices. In addition, we initiated a long-term twinning partnership program with the EU on safety and security matters whereby an update of regulations, processes and procedures along with training programs will be established."
The aviation security workshop is one of various support measures funded by the EU in the framework of the EU-Lebanon dialogue on aviation security, ranging from exchange of experts in cargo security and training of border-control officers in document security, to study visits to European airports.
