Tunis - Arabstoday

On the northeastern coast of Cap Bon, set proudly against the Mediterranean sea, lies a unique archeological site – The Punic city of Kerkouane. Founded in the 6th century BC, the settlement included residential neighborhoods, temples, shops and industry, laid out in a well-planned system of streets and squares. The city was destroyed and abandoned around 250BC, during the first Punic War. Unlike most Punic settlements, however, it was never rebuilt by the Romans. And so the city lay forgotten for over two thousand years, until 1952 when it was rediscovered by archeologists. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage register, Kerkouane is the only known example of the architecture and urban planning of one of the great civilizations of the ancient world. Exploring the site offers visitors the remarkable opportunity to see the intimate details of daily life in a Punic settlement. Much of the city has been excavated, revealing streets, building foundations, squares and fortifications. From tunisialive
