The planned opening of Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport has been delayed because of fire safety concerns, according to reports. The new 2.5 billion euros airport, which was due to open on June 3rd and would replace Berlin’s Tegel and Schönefeld airports, will not open until further safety checks on the terminal building have been carried out. This is the second time the completion of the airport has been delayed, as it was originally set to open in 2011. Airport officials have revealed they hope the new airport will be open by August 2012. Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport will serve as Air Berlin’s main hub, handling 27 million passengers annually, with longer term plans to further grow capacity up to 45 million passengers.
